IHR Emergency Committee regarding the epidemic of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
On 17 May 2026, the Director-General of WHO determined that the epidemic of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo constituted a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), and that it did not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency, as defined in the IHR. The Director-General convened the first meeting of the IHR Emergency Committee on 19 May 2026 and, on 22 May 2026, issued temporary recommendations to States Parties. A second meeting was held on 18 August 2026, with temporary recommendations issued on 24 August 2026.
