Disease Outbreak News (DONs)|All Hazards Public Health Events

The latest WHO Disease Outbreak News (DONs) provide information on confirmed and potential acute public health events of concern across all hazards.

According to Article 11.4 of the International Health Regulations (2005) [IHR (2005)], WHO may make information on acute public health events available, if other information about the same event has already become publicly available and there is a need for the dissemination of authoritative and independent information. The DON reports fulfill this requirement.

The events reported in the DON is not an exhaustive list of events that WHO is responding to globally but include those that meet the criteria for information to be made available to the public.

The criteria for Disease Outbreak News

Disease Outbreak News (DONs) are published relating to confirmed or potential public health events, of:

  • Unknown cause with a significant or potential international health concern that may affect international travel or trade;
  • A known cause which has demonstrated the ability to cause serious public health impact and spread internationally;
  • High public concern which may lead to disruption of required public health interventions, or could disrupt international travel or trade.
